I Can Live

This weekend, I found myself reconnecting with the child in me and it was through this wonderful song that I empowered myself and liberated myself from beliefs that curtailed me from reaching my full potentials.

Singing this song, I realized that nothing is impossible–see if you break down the word impossible, it would say I M POSSIBLE.

Singing is more than entertainment and a showcase of your prowess as a singer, it is an expression, a language that tells you who you can be and what you can be.  (So can just imagine what power you hold when you have that Magic Mic in your hand!?)  You definitely can perform MAGIC with your Magic Mic, friends, literally, metaphorically.

Here it goes…

I can love
I can reach the
Heavens above
I can write what is wrong
I can sing just any song

I can dance
I can fly
And touch the rainbow in the sky
I can be your good friend
I can love you
Until the end

What took you so long to make me feel
I can give love a love so real
What took you so long to make me know…

What took you so long to make me cry
So I will know the reason why
What took you so long to let me know…

So if by any chance you can look for this song in your Magic Mic chips, feel free to sing it with all your heart!  Sing the song with all gusto, feel it, breathe it, and live it and see how it makes a difference knowing that you believe in yourself that you can!

Music to Your Ears

I’m always fascinated with World music, since it features the different sounds of all corners of the globe. It’s the various musical instruments used in the songs that I find very entertaining. There’s a distinct sound for each group; play them side by side and it’s all musical bliss.

I love the brass instruments of North America Western Europe, even the synthesizers which is very much employed in the mainstream music as well. No strings, tubes or hammers, just electric current. Total ear candy! I also enjoy listening to mariachi of Mexico, with their non-electric guitars and accordions, you know, those keyboard instruments that you squeeze to make sounds. Even the panpipes and marimbas of Ecuador sounds good, their historical Inca musicians played them. Moving towards  the Asian region, the Chinese plays a lot of bells, drums, gongs, flutes and stringed instruments call the quin and pipa. Same as the Chinese, the Japanese plays a lot of bells, drums, gongs and flutes too, including their own kinds of ancient stringed instruments. But my most favorite of all is the gamelan orchestra of Indonesia, where they play main instruments by striking them. In college I used to sit at the university garden and enjoy the music every time the Gamelan Ensemble play and practice their sets outdoors. Beautiful!

But well, there could not be an instrument more amazing than our own voice, which is the universal musical instrument and available in all places in the world.  The human voice, so flexible, is the only instrument that can give goosebumps. Just by watching really great singers sing on stage, or even on TV makes my hair stand up! I absolutely don’t have a gift like theirs, but oh well, it doesn’t hurt to sing once in a while especially with the karaoke mic and loud speakers turned on. Besides, karaoke microphones, like our very own Magic Sing, were not invented for those with great voices only. It was invented for everybody who loves singing!

So just let the music reach your ears, and always enjoy!

New Year Songs

A site especially created for the celebration of New Year listed some popular new year songs which are very familiar to us, like Auld Lang Syne, or the Barry Manilow classic.

Auld Lang Syne is like the national anthem of New Year. The song is sung at the strike of midnight on 31st of December in almost every English speaking country round the world. Auld Lang Syne is said to have been at least partially written by Robert Burns in the 1700’s.  It was first published in 1796 after Burns’ death. It is believed that the early variations of the song were sung prior to 1700 and inspired Burns to produce the modern rendition. An old Scotch tune, “Auld Lang Syne” literally means ‘old long ago’, or ‘time remembered with fondness’ or simply, ‘the good old days.’

The Song
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of Auld Lang Syne.

For Auld Lang Syne, my dear,
for Auld Lang Syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet
for Auld Lang Syne.

Here’s more New Year songs:

What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve
(A classic song written by Frank Loesser and sung by Ella Fitzgerald in 1960.)
When the bells all ring and the horns all blow
And the couples we know are fondly kissing.
Will I be with you or will I be among the missing?

Maybe it’s much too early in the game
Ooh, but I thought I’d ask you just the same
What are you doing New Year’s
New Year’s eve?

Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight
When it’s exactly twelve o’clock that night
Welcoming in the New Year
New Year’s eve

Maybe I’m crazy to suppose
I’d ever be the one you chose
Out of a thousand invitations
You received

Ooh, but in case I stand one little chance
Here comes the jackpot question in advance:
What are you doing New Year’s
New Year’s Eve?

It’s Just Another New Year’s Eve
(This song was written by Marty Panzer and performed by Barry Manilow)
Don’t look so sad,
It’s not so bad you know.
It’s just another night,
That’s all it is.
It’s not the first,
It’s not the worst you know,
We’ve come through all the rest,
We’ll get through this.
We’ve made mistakes,
But we’ve made good friends too.
Remember all the nights we spent with them?
And all our plans,
Who says they can’t come true?
Tonight’s another chance to start again.
It’s just another New Year’s Eve,
Another night like all the rest.
It’s just another New Year’s Eve,
Let’s make it the best.
It’s just another New Year’s Eve,
It’s just another Auld Lang Syne,
But when we’re through this New Year
You’ll see, will be
Just fine.
We’re not alone, we’ve got the world you know.
And it won’t let us down, just wait and see.
And we’ll grow old, but think how wise we’ll grow.
There’s more you know, it’s only New Year’s Eve.
It’s just another New Year’s Eve,
Another night like all the rest.
It’s just another New Year’s Eve,
Let’s make it the best.
It’s just another New Year’s Eve,
It’s just another Auld Lang Syne,
But when we’re through this New Year, you’ll see, will be
Just fine.

It’s always fun to sing sing sing during holiday celebrations, isn’t it? :) Good thing your Magic Sing is always handy and ready!

What Makes You A Diva?

I would think that we have had so much lessons on how to sing, i.e. how to sing professionally, how to fake it (hehehe), what is tone deafness and other related topics that teaches you how to sing, however, I firmly believe that we are all bestowed with the gift of music, tone deaf or in-tune, every able being who has vocal chords who can come up with a rhythm can sing, whether it is out of tune, in tune, rapping or in monotone, it is not really in our ability to follow melody and to be in perfect pitch that makes us good singers, but in how we sing it.

Now let us talk about attitude.

According to the Wikipedia, a Diva is a celebrated female singer. The Italian term is used to describe a woman of rare, outstanding talent in the world of opera and by extension in theatre and popular music. The meaning of ‘diva’ is closely related to that of “prima donna.”  By far, my favorite definition is, the basic sense of the term is goddess, the feminine of the Latin word “divus” meaning god.

So there, simply put, a diva is a goddess.

When one is asked who he or she might consider a diva, the names of Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion comes to mind. Locally, we have Jaya, Regine Velasquez and Zsa Zsa Padilla (okay, okay, fine, these are but my favorite divas) but yes, have you ever noticed what makes them effective singers, err, divas?

Nope, it is not those glittery gowns they don nor the sparkling jewelry they have on, it is neither their eye make-up nor their oh-my-God high-heels that make them effective singers, it is the manner in which they sing the songs that makes us watch them with wide eyes open (with mouth wide open, with matching shrugging of the shoulders as if it was you singing, and the little pinky extended) as they hit those high notes and belt out to their hearts delight to our entertainment.

But did you ever really watch how they sing? They have this certain attitude that sets them apart from these other so-called singers, who can hit those high notes too, but are less celebrated than them, right?  And even when they are not singing, say in interviews (talk about our local divas, as they talk on The Buzz or Showbiz Central), they command a certain kind of respect from the people who interview or talk to them. I guess, they have that what they call the “IT Factor or the X Factor!”

Yup! It is all in the attitude!

Singing is an art, and like all art, an artwork is more valuable if it is unique, unaltered or stands out as simply what it is, beauty, in this case, beautiful singing is in the eyes (or ears) of the beholder.

Okay, okay, I know I am making this whole thing more confusing than it actually being helpful.

My point you guys is that, it is not whether you have the voice that is of perfect pitch or you not being tone deaf that makes you a good singer, it is not those vocal lessons that will make you a good singer because as long as you have vocal chords and you can hum, you can memorize lyrics, sing from the heart and have your own very unique attitude to sing or rap or belt out or… okay, okay, I have to stop being melodramatic otherwise I will explode! What I want to say is that, as long as you have the passion to sing, the confidence to deliver the song in whatever way you want to, as long as you can feel it and move the people who are listening to you, it is the attitude or the manner in which you sing it that will count a lot!

Cut to the chase, guys, remember audience impact? That is enough to make you the star for all season, the one and only superstar, the megastar… your own shining star; you are the diva that you want yourself to become.

Hold on one minute, says my husband, if women are divas, what are men who are passionate singers called? Divus? Hehehe. Well, at least in Latin, it means that.

Until next time!

Singing Tips for the Experts

Singing experts most probably know about that one term I shared, perfect pitch, simply because they have it! Of course, every gift should be continuously developed and taken care of. I came across a2z-singing-tips.com, which provides singing tips for professionals from A to Z! They have different vocal coaches sharing their own versions of A-Z singing tips. Here’s one, from Vocal Coach Yvonne DeBandi:

A = Airflow.  Never hold your breath while singing.  The airflow is what creates and carries your vocal tone, so keep it flowing.  Avoid Clavicular Breathing and Belly Breathing — instead, learn the proper way to breathe for singing, called  diaphragmatic breathing. Fill the lower portion of your lungs as if you had an inner tube around your waist that you were evenly filling.
B = Breathing properly for singing requires the shoulders to remain down and relaxed, not rise with the breath intake.  A singer will gain power to their voice by strengthening the muscles in their ribcage and back.
C = Communicate the music’s message.   During performance it is very important to communicate the message of the song.   If you make a “mistake” don’t point it out to your audience. It is most likely they did not even notice.
D = Diaphragmatic Support.   Develop the strength and coordination of the diaphragm and become a pro at controlling the speed of the airflow released, the quantity of the airflow released and the consistency of the airflow released.
E = Elasticity of the Vocal Folds. The vocal tone is created as airflow bursts through the cleft of the vocal cords causing them to vibrate/oscillate.  The vocal folds can lose elasticity due to misuse, lack of use and/or increase of age.  Be sure to train your voice with vocal exercises on a regular basis to keep your voice in shape.
F = Free your natural voice.  Don’t be a slave to any music style — even your favorite one.  Learn to sing with your full and natural voice by developing your vocal strength and coordination.  Then add stylistic nuances to achieve any singing style you desire.
G = Guessing Games.  Never guess the pitch you are about to sing.  Hear the note in your head before you open your mouth.
H = High notes require consistent and steady airflow. Many students tend to hold their breath as they sing higher. Let the air flow. Try increasing your airflow and gauge your result.
I = Increase your breathing capacity and control by doing breathing exercises every day.  Be sure to avoid patterned breathing.  Singers must negotiate phrase lengths of all different sizes, so it is important to be versatile.
J = Jumping Jacks.  If you are having trouble getting your body completely involved with singing, try doing some cardiovascular activities, like jumping jacks, for a few minutes before getting started again.  Sometimes your instrument simply needs an airflow wake-up call.
